Sunday, June 27th, 2010The House Rules Committee met this week to figure out how to push through the DISCLOSE Act, which would impose new regulations on political speech. “True to form,” writes Heritage legal scholar Hans von Spakovsky, “the committee kept the public out of a hearing about a bill intended to promote ‘transparency’ in elections.” Despite objections from conservatives, the liberals on the committee decided that one hour was sufficient time to debate the bill. “This bill is intended to silence those whose political views the liberals don’t like,” argues von Skapovsky, who cites several examples.

Rep. Steve King’s Discharge Petition

- On Wednesday, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) filed a discharge petition, a maneuver which, if it receives signatures from a majority of representatives, will force an up-or-down vote on Obamacare.
- The Obama administration plans to sue Arizona for enforcing immigration laws.
- Speaker Pelosi withdrew the DISCLOSE Act before it could be voted on. The law would have imposed onerous restrictions on free speech in the name of campaign finance reform.
